Benefits of Turmeric Tea

Turmeric is an amazing plant that has been used for thousands of years in Indian Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, and it’s no wonder that there are so many studies supporting its health benefits and so many stores selling turmeric supplements. Turmeric is a flowering plant, a part of the ginger family, and the spice that gives curry its colour. It is also used to colour curry, mustard, butters, cheeses or other dishes and it has a bitter taste. It is available in many forms, such as liquid elixir, capsules, gels, creams, powders and tea. In today’s article we’ll take a look at the benefits of turmeric tea.

Whenever you read about turmeric, you will also see the word “curcumin”. In case you are wondering, this is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It’s the substance that gives the yellow colour and the one responsible for most of the health benefits.

Turmeric Tea

As mentioned before, turmeric is available in many forms and tea is one of them. It can be made of pure turmeric powder or from the grated turmeric root. There is no specific recommended dosage and it usually depends on the condition you are trying to fix and how your body responds to the treatment.

Most research recommends dosages of 1,200 mg to 1,800 mg per day, divided in three doses of 400 to 600 mg. In case you are grating the turmeric yourself, you can use 1 to 3 grams per day.

How To Make Turmeric Tea

As we already mentioned earlier, turmeric tea can be made either from turmeric powder or grated and dried turmeric. Here’s how to prepare the tea:

  • boil 4 cups of water
  • add 2 teaspoons of grated or powdered turmeric
  • simmer for about 10 minutes
  • strain the tea and allow it to cool for 5 minutes

In order to improve the taste and the absorption, you can also add:

  • honey – to get a sweet taste and also improve anti-microbial properties
  • coconut oil, ghee, coconut milk, almond milk, whole milk or cream – in order to improve absorption, as curcumin needs healthy fats in order to dissolve
  • black pepper – helps with the absorption. If you take turmeric capsules, make sure that they also contain black pepper, otherwise you might not absorb enough curcumin in order to reap the benefits

– lemon, lime or ginger – to improve the taste but also for extra antioxidant and antimicrobial properties

Results depend on multiple factors, including age, activity levels, weight, other medication, the severity of the disease and the quality of the supplement. The best results are achieved on a long-term treatment of 4 to 8 weeks.

Some people may also experience certain side effects from turmeric. So be sure to consult with your doctor especially if you take medication or have preexisting health conditions.
